Risk Issues

Conversely, there are genuine harms and challenges to consider when introducing a non-deterministic AI solution into a process or workflow. Here's a few to consider:

Biased decisions. AI systems learn from data. If that data reflects historical inequities in hiring, lending, or customer service, the AI may amplify those inequities at scale. Amazon's now-infamous AI recruiting tool, trained on resumes from predominantly male candidates, penalized applications from women. The company scrapped it in 2017. The reputational damage is harder to delete.

Privacy exposure you didn't authorize. AI models trained on customer data can inadvertently expose personal information, violate consent agreements, or enable re-identification of individuals from supposedly anonymized datasets. Under regulations like the GDPR and emerging U.S. state privacy laws, that exposure creates legal liability.

Unclear decision-making. Many AI systems operate as "black boxes." Unlike black boxes that help investigate adverse aircraft events, AI systems produce outputs such as a risk score, hiring recommendation, or fraud flag without explaining why. When a customer is denied service or an employee is passed over, and no one can explain the logic, you have an accountability crisis.

Security vulnerabilities. AI systems can be poisoned, manipulated, or exploited, wait...hold up...are they...?

Got it. Data used to train models can be corrupted. Threat actors are already manipulating automated systems. For businesses without dedicated security oversight, this is an attack surface hiding in plain sight.

Job displacement anxiety. Employees see AI arriving in their organization and ask one question: Am I next? Without transparent communication and thoughtful integration, AI adoption fractures workplace culture. Skills like specification precision, and failure pattern recognition in AI agent infrastructure projects are not innate. However, these are becoming crucial skills for employees across organizations.

Gov-Gaps

Here is the uncomfortable truth: most small businesses deploying AI have no governance framework in place. No policies for oversight. No impact assessments. No incident response plan for when the model fails. No designated accountability for what happens when the AI gets it wrong.

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is a voluntary standard companies can use for responsible AI guidance. The standard identifies four core functions every organization deploying AI must address: Govern, Map, Measure, and Manage. Most SMBs are skipping all four.

The EU AI Act, now in force, is already setting global compliance expectations. High-risk AI applications face conformity assessments, mandatory human oversight requirements, and incident reporting obligations. Even U.S.-based companies with EU customers are in scope. Non-compliance penalties reach up to €35 million or 7% of global turnover. That is not a hypothetical. That's facts.

Now What?

  1. Who is accountable when this AI makes a mistake?
  2. What data is it trained on, and who's rights are impacted by the data use?
  3. Can someone explain its outputs to a regulator, a customer, or a court?
